KNOW YOUR PLACE BY SHELLY ELLIS

Success didn't come easy for three best friends from the streets. And now dangerous choices and reckless desire will push their bond to lethal limits.
A stint at the Branch Avenue Boys' Youth Institute taught Ricky, Derrick, and Jamal to unite when the going got tough. But fallout from their very different adult lives is making loyalty something they can't afford--and igniting drama they never saw coming . . .

Arrested during a city-wide raid, Ricky must inform on D.C's drug king pin, Dolla Dolla--and find the woman who loved and betrayed him. But revenge is a slippery slope that's putting a target on his back . . .

Jamal's backroom deal with D.C.'s corrupt mayor is giving him everything he thought he wanted: money, power, and women. CHAPTER 1

Derrick Miller stared down at the two open suitcases in front of him, closed his eyes for a few seconds, and slowly opened them again.

It was insane but, in the back of his mind, he had hoped they would disappear. Maybe the suitcases—one filled with multiple stacks of hundred-dollar bills bound neatly with multicolored rubber bands, the other stuffed with packs of white powder that was more than likely cocaine—were figments of his imagination, mini mirages right here at the Branch Avenue Boys’ Youth Institute dormitories.

But of course, they weren’t; the suitcases didn’t shimmer then disappear like a waterfall floating in the desert. They were still there with their lids yawning open, and what they contained was bared for all the world to see.
This was real, too real for Derrick’s liking.

“Come on, man! We gonna be late,” someone shouted in the hallway, shaking Derrick out of his stupor.

His eyes darted to the dormitory’s open door as two boys jogged by, probably on their way to their morning classes. Derrick’s eyes snapped back to the suitcases. He couldn’t leave them here. He certainly couldn’t let any of the boys at the Institute see them. He didn’t know whom they belonged to, but he suspected Cole, the student who was assigned to the bunk where he’d found the suitcases, knew who the owner was. He’d talk to Cole later, but his first mission was to find a place to hide these damn things.
Derrick quickly flipped both of the lids closed, zipping each of them with shaking hands. He grabbed the handles and yanked them off the bed. They landed on the linoleum floor with a thud. They had to weigh about a hundred pounds each.
Derrick gritted his teeth as he lifted the suitcases and lugged them to the door, one in each hand. He walked straight down the hall to the stairwell. A few students eyed him curiously. Several boys had a questioning look on their faces, probably wondering what the Institute’s director was doing, carrying luggage down the hall in the middle of the day like he was heading to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport fifteen miles up the road.

“Hey, Mr. Derrick!” one of the boys—dark skinned and stocky—called out as he held open the stainless steel door for him. His dark eyes dropped to the suitcases. “Damn, those look heavy! You need some h—”
“No!” Derrick barked between bursts of breath.
The boy’s ready smile disappeared.
“I mean . . . I mean, no. I-I got it. Th-thanks for asking though,” Derrick stuttered with a slight grimace.

The boy nodded just as Derrick disappeared into the stairwell and made the slow trek down the stairs to the floor below. With each step, the suitcases felt heavier and heavier. Sweat erupted on his forehead and rolled down the bridge of his nose. The short bursts of breath came out faster, making a faint whistle between his clenched teeth. The tendons and muscles in his arms started to jitter. His heart was beating fast from the stress and the strain. When he finally pushed the steel door open and reached his office, he didn’t lower the suitcases to the floor as much as hurl them.
He shut his office door behind him, locked it, and looked around frantically for a place to hide the suitcases. The office didn’t have a storage closet and the suitcases certainly wouldn’t fit in any of his cabinets or shelves. The only spot where they could possibly fit was a corner beside his file cabinet. He shoved them both into the dusty, dark space.
By now, not only was his brow sweaty, but pools of sweat had also formed under his armpits. His palms were slick with it. Sweat even dripped down his back and the crack of his ass.

When Derrick finally finished shoving the suitcases into the hiding space, he dragged across the floor a potted fiddle-leaf fig tree his fiancée, Melissa, had given him for his birthday to add a little softness to his sterile office. He set it in front of the suitcases. He then stood back and surveyed his handiwork.
It was a questionable hiding job—the plant barely provided any coverage—but it would have to do for now.

He flopped back into his rolling chair and let out a slow, long exhale. It took another ten minutes for his heart to finally return to its normal pace, for his hands to stop shaking.

How the hell did those things even get here?
How had the boys managed to smuggle something so heavy and massive into the dorms, right under the noses of the instructors and security guards? When had they done it? It must have been recently because the suitcases certainly would have been noticed during their weekly inspections of the boys’ bunks and lockers. Had someone else brought them?
Cole knows all the answers, he thought, staring at the fig tree. And that boy better tell me the damn truth!

Hook Shot by Kennedy Ryan Blog Tour and Review

HS by KR.png
A deeply emotional standalone romance set in the worlds of professional basketball and high fashion.
Divorced. Single dad. Traded to a losing squad.
Cheated on, betrayed, exposed.
My perfect life blew up in my face and I'm still picking up the pieces.
The last thing I need is her.
A wildflower. A storm. A woman I can't resist.
Lotus DuPree is a kick to my gut and a wrench in my plans
from the moment our eyes meet.
I promised myself I wouldn't trust a woman again,
but I've never wanted anyone the way I want Lo.
She's not the plan I made, but she's the risk I have to take.

A warrior. A baller. The one they call Gladiator.
Kenan Ross charged into my life smelling all good, looking even better and snatching my breath from the moment we met. The last thing I need is him.
I’m working on me. Facing my pain and conquering my demons.
I've seen what trusting a man gets you.
I. Don't. Have. Time. For. This.
But he just keeps coming for me.
Keeps knocking down my defenses and stealing my excuses
one by one.
He never gives up, and now...I'm not sure I want him to.

excerpt.png

            One little kiss.
The trick is to control it. A little pressure. A little tongue. A tiny taste, then get out.
With my battle plan in place, I meet Kenan’s eyes over our shot glass rims and, on the crowd’s count of three, we knock our drinks back together. The fiery liquid scorches my throat. I give an “ahhhhhh” and slam my glass down. He does the same, and we face each other across the table.
“Let’s get this over with.” I flash a wide smile and false bravado to my friends. “I’m gonna blow his mind, folks.”
They answer with wolf whistles and catcalls, emboldening me. The tiniest quirk of Kenan’s mouth is the only clue that he might find this all amusing.
Instead of leaning across the table like everyone else has done so far, he steps aroundthe table until he stands directly in front of me. My quips and quick humor wither under the intensity of his stare. He leans down until his lips are only a breath above mine. He slides his hands down my bare arms and grasps my elbows to pull me up, eliminating the last few inches separating our lips.
It starts with the lightest pressure, barely a kiss at all. His lips rest against mine. Him, demanding nothing. Me, determined I won’t give him anything, but with a slight shift of his head, the new angle deepens the contact, opens my mouth. It’s a petition to enter, to taste, to sample. My lips barely part, but my sigh grants permission, and he doesn’t hesitate, cupping my face, tugging gently on my chin, opening me and probing inside, slowly and languorously with fiery, liquored licks. When his tongue brushes the roof of my mouth, a thousand fingers, everywhere at once, stroke my arms, my spine, my neck, my legs. Not even the most hidden parts of me remain untouched by sensation. Every inch of me is stimulated. I gasp, and he immediately dives deeper, like he’s chasing the secrets tucked under my tongue and sealed in the lining of my mouth.
I don’t know if the growl is his, if the whimper is mine, but all the things that would keep this tame—my friends watching, our inhibitions, propriety—melt in the wrath of this heat, like we’re kissing under the sun. Rusty cogs inside of me, oiled by tequila and passion, start turning in ways long forgotten, if ever known before. Mindlessly, I strain up, push my hands over the width of his shoulders and wrap my fingers around his neck. He’s too far, and I want to be close. He splays his hands over my back, completely encompassing as he pulls me into the shelter of his body. He bites my lip and I lick into the tangy well of his mouth. God, he’s delicious. I’ve never tasted anything like him. Never felt anything like this.
With each second, it intensifies. We intensify. Our hands grip tighter. Our mouths grow desperate. The breaths come fast and short through our noses because I won’t release his mouth and he won’t let mine go. This kiss is a dark corridor, twisting and turning, luring me deeper. I can’t find my way out, and if someone opened a door offering escape, I’d slam it in their face.

My Review
To be honest, I don't read a lot a lot of sports romances, because I have no interest in sports whatsoever and I'm worried that I won't enjoy the story because it might be to heavy on the sports aspect.  Thankfully that's not what happens in this case.  The banter and PYT references between Kenan and Lotus were so real I felt like I was looking at them having their conversations.  Lotus was great, and even though Kenan was older than her, she proved to be right in many aspects of the story.  And I have a few choice words for Kenan's Ex Wife.  She was totally hateable throughout the story.  Can you say I think she's the devil's sister.    And let's not forget the shock factor.  There were several times I held my breath while reading.  Ms. Ryan pens such emotional reads.  And for those that have read Grip and Long Shot, several Characters will make appearances in this story as well.  This was a great read and I can't wait to see what's next from this author.

My Review

Both from different lifestyles, Parker Abbott and Kayleigh Jemison were close friends in grade school, until a foolish mistake drove a wedge between their friendship. Years later, Parker's family wants to buy Kayleigh building. She'll do it under one stipulation, Parker has to pretend to be her fiance at her ex boyfriend sister's wedding. Eventually her ex wants a second chance, and Kayleigh has to decide who will ultimately get her heart.

There were several things I enjoyed about this story. I loved the writing style of the author. She makes everything so vivid. I also enjoyed reading the scene that was dipliced on the cover. You could feel the emotions between the two characters, the happy times as well as the sad times. One thread throughout this story was that everyone needed to learn how to communicate better, which tends to happen in real life. This was a great read

Excerpt from My Truth, My Time, My Turn

“Sometimes you just want to slap people. Then you remember Karma hits twice as hard.” Unknown

Fancy scrolled through her phone and stopped when she saw the BREAKING NEWS headlines.

FORMER SENIOR PASTOR OF HOLY ROCK MINISTRIES

ARRESTED ON FELONY EMBEZZLEMENT….

She read the article over and over, not believing Hezekiah had been carted off to jail. Yes, she and her sons had discussed this. Part of her knew this day was forthcoming, but to actually read it, see it in black and white, made her feel some type of way. She got ready to call Khalil but stopped abruptly when she heard Winston coming out of the bathroom.

Walking over to her with a white towel covering his intimate parts, his body glistened from having been underneath the streaming jets of water.

Dang, this man is sexy. Full lips, strong chin, cheek muscles that stood out when he clenched his jaw. Fancy eyed him with desire in her eyes as he approached her and stood in front of her.

He came close, looking down at her intensely, before leaning down, and kissing her as she sat on the edge of the firm bed. “I wish I could have persuaded you to join me. I would have made it worth your while,” he teased as he planted delicate kisses along her face, neck, and earlobes.

For a minute, Fancy forgot all about Hezekiah and his woes and allowed her mind and body to react to Winston’s touch.

Your son is calling. The special ringtone pulled her back to reality before she could respond to Winston. Gently, she eased Winston back and answered it.

“Ma, did you hear? They got the dirty dog,” Khalil said without saying hello. She could hear the satisfaction filtering through his voice.

“I know; I just saw it on my phone. I…I don’t know what to say.”

Winston looked down at her and listened, trying to decipher as much as he could about what Khalil could be saying. George had already contacted him and told him what had happened so he wasn’t surprised if that was what Khalil was calling his mother about.

“What do you mean you don’t know what to say? The man has gone down and it’s not over. It’s just beginning. Payback is a mutha, Ma. It’s time he pays the piper. Know what I mean?”

“Yes, I hear you but it’s still your father and my husband.”

“Hold up, he is not your husband. You are divorced, Ma. And last I heard and saw for myself, you already got somebody to take his place. As for him being my father, yeah, he’s my father by blood, but what’s blood got to do with it? Apparently nothing, ‘cause look at the way he’s dissed me and Xavier. The man is ruthless, so don’t go soft on me now, Ma.”

“Yes, I hear ya, son. Anyway, I just need a minute. I’ll call you back later. Okay?”

“Uh, okay, but you gonna be all right? I wasn’t expecting you to sound like you just buried the guy or something. Everything'll be a’ite. You hear me?”

“Yes, sweetheart, I hear you. I’ll talk to you later.”

“Okay, bye, Ma.” The call ended and with tears in her eyes, Fancy looked up at Winston.

“What is it, if you don’t mind me asking?”

“It’s Hezekiah.”

“Is he all right? Did something happen? Another stroke?”

Fancy shook her head. “No, he’s been arrested. It’s been in the making for some time, but now that it’s actually happened I…I don’t know how I’m feeling,” she admitted, wringing her hands and bowing her head.

Winston reached down, gathered her by her forearms, pulled her up against his taut body, and held her tightly as she rested her head against his chest. “The man was your husband until a few weeks ago. You have history together, children together. It’s normal to have mixed emotions about his arrest.”

Fancy looked up at Winston. “Thank you, Winston.”

“I’m here for you. In any way I can. I hope you know that.”

Fancy nodded her approval and laid her head back against his chest as he tightened his arms around her. She needed to feel safe protected, and secure. Winston made her feel all of the above.

Winston’s mind was a whirlwind of conflicting thoughts. He had not admitted to himself until now his growing feelings for Fancy McCoy. She reminded him of his ex, Josselyn. He and Josselyn had been engaged for less than six months when she, out of the blue, called off the engagement, saying she wasn’t ready to get married after all. Winston was heartbroken. When she accepted his proposal of marriage it was like a dream had become a reality. It was heartbreaking for him to see her weeks later with another man when they were supposed to spend their lives together, but life had offered a cruel blow.

The caveat in the whole break up was when Winston received a promotion on his job that would require him to relocate to Memphis. After ending things the way she did, Winston couldn’t wait to leave town and start anew.

His mind was not on meeting anyone else. Instead, his intentions were to make a mark in his new position in Memphis and continue to move up the corporate ladder. But his chance encounter with Fancy revealed just how small of a world it is.

Not exactly a guy with a stellar reputation behind closed doors, it didn’t take much prodding from his longtime friend, George Reeves, when Winston told him about the hot woman he’d met at Brother Juniper’s restaurant. George asked Winston to tell him more about the woman who seemed to have temporarily gotten his mind off Josselyn.

George broke out into raucous laughter when Winston told him the woman’s name was Fancy McCoy. How much better could things get?

George gave Winston some background on Fancy McCoy and her husband, Hezekiah. He didn’t want his friend getting sucked in by the likes of any one with the last name ‘McCoy’, but it could possibly work for George the more he thought about it.

Listening to George run down a quick history about the McCoy’s and Holy Rock made Winston that more enthralled and eager to get to know more about this striking mystery woman he’d met.

As for George, the more he gave thought to Winston’s encounter with Fancy, the more he convinced himself this was divine intervention. Why else, of all the women he could have met, Winston met Fancy McCoy? From there, a plan began to circulate in his mind. If he could convince Winston to woo Fancy McCoy, and if she liked Winston, then Winston could keep his eyes and ears open for any shenanigans she and her crooked sons might have up their sleeves toward Hezekiah, and possibly toward George too. In return for his spying, George would only need to convince Winston he could enjoy the pleasure of having a knock off like Fancy to mess with since he’d made the move to Memphis and didn’t know a lot of people.

If George was able to get the inside scoop on Fancy’s plans, the less he would have to worry about his money train being cut off by Hezekiah. George figured it would be a win-win for both him and Winston. Of course, he’d break off a little money to Winston from time to time, not that Winston needed it. The man enjoyed a lucrative career and money was the least of his worries.

After some prodding, with a bit of reluctance mixed with curiosity, Winston agreed to get to know Fancy better. Anything Winston heard or saw that he believed might be helpful in their pursuit of the money George told Winston Hezekiah’s son had stolen from his dad, Winston was supposed to let George know.

What took Winston by surprise was his feelings. He didn’t expect to develop the strong attraction he had toward Fancy, but he did. She was easy to like, made him laugh, and definitely made him forget about Josselyn breaking his heart. But was it enough to make him back off doing what he had agreed? He tried not to think about that but every time he thought about telling George he wasn’t on board with the plan anymore he remembered how he had been walked over by Josselyn, and he knew he could not fully trust Fancy. Thus, his loyalty remained with George.

“Look, everything will be fine. You’re going to be fine,” Winston assured Fancy. To see how much she was affected by Hezekiah’s arrest told Winston a lot. Fancy still loved her husband. What a fool this Hezekiah guy is. It also told him something else—to keep his heart in check because her feelings certainly didn’t lie with him.

What inspired you to write this book?
This latest book release is book nine in the "My Son’s Wife" series. I never intended to write a sequel to a book let alone nine books, but that’s exactly what I’m doing. This series has been my bestseller and readers seem to want more and more. I’m already working on installment number ten. I’ve come to love the characters and see them in a realistic aspect. It’s a fun entertaining series with lots of drama.

What can we expect from you in the future?
I’m working on more books that I call “Shorts by Shelia.” These are smaller books under 125 pages that are meant to give readers a short, entertaining read while they’re sitting in a doctor’s appointment, standing in a long line, or just taking a lunch break.

I also have another series called “The Real Housewives of Adverse City.” I’m working on book 4 in that series and expect to release it in late April 2019.
Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?
My characters are totally from my imagination, however, because I’ve been writing this series for a number of years, the characters seem real to me and have lives and personalities of their own.

Do your characters seem to hijack the story or do you feel like you have the reigns of the story?
I would say my characters hijack the story. For me, this is a good thing. It pulls me totally outside of ME and allows my characters  free rein to act, do, speak as they so choose. I don’t like holding the reins because it might restrict what the characters have to say and it would put more of ME into the story when it’s not about me. I’m just the messenger.

What are you passionate about these days?
I’m passionate about animal rights, about saving the lives of animals, and continuing my Vegan journey of almost nine years, which is my contribution to saving them and saving our lives at the same time.

What do you do to unwind and relax?
To unwind and relax I like kicking back, getting up in my bed, and surfing channels for the next best reality show! I watch a little Netflix, do a little reading and of course spend precious time with my granddaughter.

When did you first consider yourself a writer?
I believe I considered myself a writer before I even wrote a book. I wrote poems and as time passed I realized I had a story to tell. Now 25 books later, here I am!

Do you have a favorite movie?
My favorite movies are The Other Sister, City of Angels, You’ve Got Mail, Love and Basketball

Which of your novels can you imagine made into a movie?
I can see every last one of my novels turned into film whether it be in the form of a movie on the big screen, a TV series or a Netflix movie. They all are great stories that I believe viewers would enjoy.
