2)  F.I.R.E. Reignited by Portia Cosby
Available Now

IF YOU CAN'T STAND THE HEAT, STAY THE HELL OFF THE STAGE.

Twenty years ago, four high school students came together to form what became one of the most successful R&B girl groups of their time. F.I.R.E. was as hot as their name, known for their natural sex appeal and sometimes risqué music. The bad girl, the golden child, the chubby, lovable one, and the pretty tomboy grew up in front of the world; and as they navigated the road to fame, they lost themselves amid the limelight.

Inflated egos, creative differences, personality conflicts, and addiction created discord among the ladies; but lead singer Shai’s decision to go solo ultimately ended the group’s eleven-year run. Though Shai never missed a beat, Paris, KiKi, and Reign were left to remix their careers.

Now in their mid-thirties, an unexpected and widely publicized reunion brings the ladies of F.I.R.E. to the table to consider making one last album together. With animosity and damaging secrets still looming over them, will they be able to move forward without clearing the air or will they each spill the tea they brought along with them?

6)  Things I Should Have Told My Daughter: Lies, Lessons & Love Affairs by Pearl Cleage
Available Now

In this inspiring memoir—that Jane Fonda raves “will make you braver…want to live your life better and make a difference”—the award-winning playwright and bestselling author of What Looks Like Crazy on an Ordinary Day reminisces on the art of juggling marriage, motherhood, and politics while working to hone her craft as a writer.

Before she become one of America’s most popular playwrights and a bestselling author with a novel endorsed by Oprah’s Book Club, Pearl Cleage was a struggling writer going through personal and professional turmoil.

In Things I Should Have Told My Daughter, Cleage takes us back to the 1970s and 80s, when she was a young wife and mother trying to find her voice as a writer. Living in Atlanta, she worked alongside Maynard Jackson, the city’s first black mayor and it was here among fraught politics that she began to feel the pull of her own dreams—a pull that led her away from her husband as she grappled with ideas of feminism and self-fulfillment.

In the tradition of literary giants such as Joan Didion, Nora Ephron, and Maya Angelou, Cleage crafts an illuminating and moving self-portrait in which her “extraordinary experiences, deep social concerns, passionate self-analysis, and personal and artistic liberation, all so openly confided, make for a highly charged, redefining read” (Booklist).

Now she’s finding that something’s not quite right in their world. Unfortunately, Patricia can’t focus on him, when she has a secret of her own that has shadowed her since age sixteen. Fate has been unkind in the fact that her “secret” is actually watching her every move, waiting for the chance to destroy Patricia and her family.
Lauren, the second Mrs. Carter, is an independent, down to earth, home girl from New York with enough passion and sassiness to keep her husband intrigued, and the presence of mind not be taken for a ride. She gave Xavier an ultimatum and Mr. Carter managed to put a ring on it, even though, unknown to her, he’d already made a lifetime commitment to his college sweetheart.
Shawn Johnston has a unique and intricate connection to both “wives” and the husband, which only stirs an already complicated pot. She survived, by coming out on the opposite end of a turbulent past within the foster care system. Her quest for the one thing she has craved more than anything, may cause everyone’s world to collapse and send someone to an early grave.
All in all, when the skeletons come creaking out of the closet, two of the women will wonder if the man they share is worth dying for.

8)  Ruby by Cynthia Bond
Available Now

A New York Times bestseller and Oprah Book Club 2.0 selection, the epic, unforgettable story of a man determined to protect the woman he loves from the town desperate to destroy her. This beautiful and devastating debut heralds the arrival of a major new voice in fiction.
Ephram Jennings has never forgotten the beautiful girl with the long braids running through the piney woods of Liberty, their small East Texas town. Young Ruby Bell, “the kind of pretty it hurt to look at,” has suffered beyond imagining, so as soon as she can, she flees suffocating Liberty for the bright pull of 1950s New York. Ruby quickly winds her way into the ripe center of the city—the darkened piano bars and hidden alleyways of the Village—all the while hoping for a glimpse of the red hair and green eyes of her mother.

When a telegram from her cousin forces her to return home, thirty-year-old Ruby finds herself reliving the devastating violence of her girlhood. With the terrifying realization that she might not be strong enough to fight her way back out again, Ruby struggles to survive her memories of the town’s dark past. Meanwhile, Ephram must choose between loyalty to the sister who raised him and the chance for a life with the woman he has loved since he was a boy.

Full of life, exquisitely written, and suffused with the pastoral beauty of the rural South, Ruby is a transcendent novel of passion and courage. This wondrous page-turner rushes through the red dust and gossip of Main Street, to the pit fire where men swill bootleg outside Bloom’s Juke, to Celia Jennings’s kitchen, where a cake is being made, yolk by yolk, that Ephram will use to try to begin again with Ruby.

Utterly transfixing, with unforgettable characters, riveting suspense, and breathtaking, luminous prose, Ruby offers an unflinching portrait of man’s dark acts and the promise of the redemptive power of love.

Ruby was a finalist for the PEN America Robert Bingham Debut Novel Award, a Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers selection, and an Indie Next Pick.

Disasters in Dating

Dating is hard.
Dating online is hard.
Dating online in your thirties is hard.
Dating online in your thirties after being in a ten-year relationship is hard.

What’s not hard?
Meeting men who aren’t really single.
Having your time wasted.
Receiving unsolicited pictures of genitalia.
Said genitalia.

When did dating become so complicated?

I just want to find a nice, good looking man who replies to my entire text message and doesn’t text me “WYD” every hour. I just want to find a fun loving, intelligent man who doesn’t have a Master’s Degree in Cheating, Shenanigans and Tomfoolery and isn’t fluent in lies. I just want to find a man who is actually the height he listed in his dating profile.

I jumped back into the dating scene with tempered expectations. I didn’t think all the men I would meet were going to be amazing, but I didn’t think so many of them were going to be disasters.
