PROLOGUE

Beacon Hill, Massachusetts May 1860

Elbert stood on Beacon Hill watching a house in the afternoon sun, waiting for her to go about her daily chores. Miss Anna had not spoken to him, but she had not failed to make eye contact either. She was a fine-looking woman, with light-brown skin and arresting chestnut-brown eyes. Elbert wanted to keep company with her. He waited, and with his booted foot against the fence, he took a slow draw of his cigar. As he leaned his head back and released the smoke, he heard the door to the little house open. Dropping his cigar, he snuffed it out and stood to his full height of six feet.

He saw that her stride faltered upon seeing him. Still, she stepped down the two steps leading from the front of the house. And he was not deterred.

“Good afternoon, Miss Anna.”

Again, she did not respond, but that was fine. He assessed her; she wore a gray short-sleeved dress with a white collar and black shoes that peeked out ever so slightly from beneath her hem as she walked. Holding the gate open, he waited until she passed through, and once she was on the street with him, he fell into step behind her. Smiling to himself, he knew she was unnerved, but she managed to hide it.

“Mind if I come along?” he asked, even though he was already following her.

They walked for a time in silence. She stopped, looking back at him, before smiling and continuing on. It was a small victory for him, her smile; he had been following her for almost two weeks. During the two weeks, she had offered nothing at all. She was not what he had chased in women in the past, and he was sure he was going about it all wrong.

He strolled a few paces behind her until they reached the dry-goods and laundry storefront. She wandered in without looking back, and he waited just off to the side of the door. When she was out of sight, he began to assess his surroundings. There were people milling about from store to store. Traffic was a steady flow of horses, wagons, and buggies coming and going. He noticed two colored men standing on the opposite side of the road, and they appeared to be talking.

The bell to the dry-goods store chimed, signifying the door had opened, and he turned just as Anna stepped from the door frame. Elbert was about to move in to help her with her basket when up on the curb stepped a tall white man. Moving with purpose, the man stepped into her path and grabbed her arm, yanking her. She attempted to pull away, but he punched her on the side of the head, dazing her. Springing into action, Elbert grabbed him from behind, locking his arm about the man’s throat.

When the man finally became weak, Elbert wrestled him to the ground and commenced to beating him. So focused was he on breaking the man down, he did not see two more white men step up on the curb. They tackled him from behind, and he could see Anna swinging her purse in an attempt to help him. She was screaming, “Let him go! Let him go!”

The tables had turned, with him lying on his stomach in the dirt and manure of the roadway. Elbert could feel the knee of one of his captors in the middle of his back. They grabbed his neck roughly, placing the metal collar on him. A crowd had gathered, and he could see the two colored men backing the crowd off so his captors could work at getting him collared, cuffed, and shackled. Lying on his side, he could also see a large fat man slap Anna before cuffing her. The man walked her toward a wagon with a cage on the back of it and pulled her onto the bed. He chained her to the outside of the cage before ripping her dress down about her waist, exposing her breasts.

Elbert watched as she attempted to cover herself, but the man slapped her again. He closed his eyes against the scene and his failure. When she was subdued, the three men began struggling with him to get him into the cage. They had Anna, so he gave in so she wouldn’t be alone. As the cage closed, he looked about for help, but the crowd had dispersed. This was a common occurrence.

The wagon reached the outskirts of town, slowed, and then stopped. Elbert finally looked her in the eyes, but said nothing. She was afraid, and he reached his hand through the bars, gently squeezing hers. He saw that her eyes watered, but she did not cry. Although he appeared not to be paying attention, he was. He listened as the men argued about what to do with him.

The taller man who had initiated the snatching of Anna said, “We need to kill him. The nigger can’t be broken. It’s in his eyes.”

There were now four men instead of the three, and the newly arrived man disagreed. “There ain’t a nigger alive that can’t be broke. I say we sell him. We’ll get top dollar.”

Elbert listened as the debate raged on; he would go with death, though he hated to leave her like this. Shit, he welcomed death, but when the debate came to a close, it was three against one in favor of selling him. Anna looked relieved as she leaned her forehead against the bars of the cage.

The men stood in a circle, and the taller man who wanted him dead had the last word. “We should kill him, cut our losses, and sell the female. Mark my words, this is the wrong nigger.”

My Review
This book touches on a condition that affects black women a lot more. Reading about Kaleigh and Grant was an emotional experience. There were several surprises that I did not see coming. It was also great to see the relationship between the sisters. The author did such a great job with the pacing of the storyline, the character development as well as the plot. I am so ready to read the next book in the series.

Book Tour: Confessions in B Flat by Donna Hill

CONFESSIONS IN B-FLAT BY DONNA HILL

Essence bestselling author Donna Hill brings us an emotional love story set against the powerful backdrop of the civil rights movement that gripped a nation‹a story as timely as it is timeless...

The year is 1963. In Harlem, the epicenter of Black culture, the fight for equality has never been stronger. The time is now. Enough is enough. Yet even within its ranks, a different kind of battle rages. Love thy neighbor? Or rise up against your oppressors?

Jason Tanner has just arrived in New York to help spread the message of his mentor, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., of passive resistance, while beat poet Anita Hopkins believes the teachings of Malcolm X with all her heart: that the way to true freedom is “by any means necessary.” When Jason sees Anita perform her poetry at the iconic B-Flat lounge, he’s transfixed. And Anita has never met anyone who can match her wit for wit like this…

One movement, two warring ideologies—can love be enough to unite them?

Confessions in B-Flat is a celebration of the hard-won victories of those who came before us, and a stark reminder of just how far we still have to go.

The rhythm flowed, the rattles shook, the spectators clapped their hands and soon we were all feeling the rhythm of the music in our bones and in our souls. The sound was thunderous, climbing to the top of the two-story ceiling, and I moved my hips and shook my shoulders and clapped my hands. My eyes were half-closed and I couldn't make out anyone's individual face and I didn't think or care that they could see me. I'd never wanted to dance like this before. I had danced alone in my room but to regular music. Never something that felt bigger than music like this. This felt like me. That I didn't need to know the right steps and movements because there were no wrong moves. The music changed, the drum beat got faster and one by one we, the spectators, stepped back and watched. They made a circuit around the room, those without the drumsticks, waving white handkerchiefs to one side, then the other. I felt like there were words being spoken just below the surface. And then the drums and feet fell silent. The dance was complete.

I took a moment to look around the room. Everyone looked as relaxed as I felt. I felt like melted butter, so flowy, that if I slid into a chair, I might just slide bonelessly to the floor. Even though I hadn't broken a sweat, I felt spent, like after a hard run. The drummers and dancers filed out of the hall. Headmistress Pendergrass took her place in the center of the room once more.

EXCERPT

Making her way around the small group behind her, Diane returned to her seat near the windows that gave her a view of the New Orleans-bound plane that was still grounded.

She reached for the magazine inside her LeSportsac tote bag and flipped through the pages of Essence's June edition. The "True Love: The Myths, the Reality" article caught her eye, but first she wanted to see what tips were in the new issue's other article about being single and satisfied. That particular slogan beneath the picture of Iman with her NBA player husband and daughter and the big, bold letters staring back saying "We Are Family!" contradicted the "single and satisfied sentiment." If anything, their happy faces made her feel alone and disappointed.

A low grunt beside her got her attention, and she looked to her left to see a man trying to get comfortable in one of the seats. His long frame poured into the aisle in front of them as he shifted his stiff, magnificent body, making his unusual length stand out even more.

A family with two young children stopped in front of her and the stranger. The mother held on to a Polaroid camera and one of the kids clutched a piece of paper and pen.

"We hate to bother you, Warrior, but do you mind?"

The guy wore a scowl on his face as he took the piece of paper and scrawled his name across it.

"No pictures, if you don't mind. I'm just trying to spend some quality time with my lady before our flight," he said in a voice so low that it was barely audible.

The group moved on, and Diane sighed with relief after noticing no other stragglers threatened to invade their space, and she kept her own curiosity about him in check. He was a man that clearly wanted to be left alone, but that was until she was dragged in to fight the imposition his celebrity caused him. Turning the page, she mumbled to her seatmate, "Your lady?"

"They usually leave me alone if I have company."

She smiled, not able to resist the urge to tease him. "Glad to know I could be of assistance. By the way, I'd be highly upset if after all I did to save you from your fans my man happens to forget my birthday this year."

He laughed. She placed the magazine on her lap and turned to get a good look at him. He kept his head down, but she still noticed the intensity in his golden brown hazel eyes beneath thick, dark brows. A passerby called out, "The Warrior." With his head still bent, she saw his softened face transform with another type of discomfort. A group of young men repeated the nickname, and the guy beside her clenched his jaw. Strong, angry nostrils flared above full lips, and for some reason, Diane felt the need to protect him.

Her soft voice broke the tension, and she placed her hand atop his forearm. "I take it you would rather they don't recognize you."

"Right now just isn't the best time for me."

"You must be pretty famous. People are whispering and staring at you." Diane watched the corridor fill with people slowing down just long enough to get a glimpse of the Warrior as he waited at the gate.

He shrugged and shifted again in his seat, not saying anything, but also not moving to get from under her touch.

A gate attendant appeared and offered him two small white flight pillows. He struggled as the attendant watched without offering any more help that might invade this man's space. On instinct, Diane reached to help, placing the pillows behind his back, pausing to ask if that was any help. When he nodded, the attendant returned to her post at the counter.

His laborious effort of pointing behind him was just as uncomfortable for her to watch. "Landed on my back during last night's game."

"Game?"

He smiled and laughed again.

"What's so funny?"

"You're refreshing."

"No. I'm just confused. Would it be safe to assume you are referring to basketball?"

He nodded.

"No need to tell me more. I don't follow sports, so any conversation about teams and the like would be wasting your time and mine. But I do hope you find relief soon."

The Warrior smiled and signaled to get the gate attendant's attention.

"Your ticket?" he asked Diane.

"My what?"

He pointed toward the sign with their destination and flight number nearby. "Are you going to New Orleans, too?"

"Uh, yes."

He stared at the ticket before handing it to the attendant. "There was a mix-up when my lady and I made our travel reservations. Is there any way you could seat her beside me in first class?"

Turning back to Diane after the attendant walked away, he offered a stiff shrug. "Like I said earlier, I hurt my back in the game and now the spasms are killing me. I just want to rest during the flight. Do you mind sitting with me? That's the only way I can make sure whoever has that seat doesn't work my nerves the next few hours."

Diane looked back at the uniformed woman that was still smiling and typing on the computer terminal in front of her. "Why me?"

He lifted his head, and once their eyes met, Diane felt herself drawn to him. Just as he opened his mouth to speak, the attendant returned holding a new ticket out for Diane to accept.

"Mr. Scott, we're about to start boarding, but I'm willing to allow you and your companion early entry so you can get situated. Please follow me."

Diane paused, but he nodded after standing, and gestured for her to follow. Collecting her belongings and his small bag, she walked with him toward the jet bridge.

Book Review: The Blessed Opportunity by Danyelle Scroggins

 Title:  The Blessed Opportunity

Author: Danyelle Scroggins

Genre: Christian Fiction

Rating: 💣💣💣💣💣

Pastor Scroggins always seems to amaze me with every book, and this one is no different.  It is a continuation of A Louisiana Love Series and she did not disappoint.  Hope and Damon are deciding if their relationship is what God truly wants for them, but they get more than they bargained for.

I started getting really nervous about 40% of the way, because the story started to go in a direction that was not normal for the author.  Although it's slightly different from her norm, this was a very well written story.   There were all kinds of surprises, and in a way, I wanted to peak at the end, because I just wanted to know what happened, but I resisted.  I laughed and cried and there were some lessons learned throughout the story.  This story left me emotionally spent through out several parts of the story and up until the very end.  This was an amazingly God inspired read.  I can't wait to see what is next from Pastor Scroggins.

After the success of Oakland and Azriel’s articles, Sammy decides it’s time to take the world by storm again. This time, he puts Pryer and Deacon on opposing sides.

No stranger to pleasure, Pryer lives the life of a sensuous woman who goes after everything she desires. Her biggest belief when it comes to men is that they can’t handle a woman who knows what she wants and how to take control in the bedroom. Having built a large following and huge success giving tips and tricks to women looking to spice up their love lives, Pryer gladly accepts the challenge given by Sammy… but her confidence wavers slightly when she realizes who she’s up against.

Deacon has the ability to convince a woman to do anything he desires. His straightforward, charming demeanor has preceded him within the industry. Because of his reputation of having no shortage in bed partners, he’s Sammy’s first pick to prove that women can be persuaded to do just about anything after hearing the right words from the right man. There’s no doubt in Deacon’s mind that he can make his competition submit to his rule… until he learns his competition is Pryer.
