Book Review: Only One Knight by Kendy Ward

Title: Only One Knight Book 2 in the Knight in Damaged Armor Series
Author:  Kendy Ward
Genre:  Christian Fiction
Rating:  💣💣💣💣💣

Priscilla Deveaux and Randy Knight are both opposites.  Priscilla grew up in poverty with her father not in her life. Although she has accepted Christ, there are some deep issues that she hasn't resolved that is unknowingly hindering her growth.  Randy Knight is a millionaire and raising a slightly troublesome daughter, grew up in church, but a past indiscretion has caused him to lose his faith and grow further from God.  Although Priscilla is growing feelings for Randy, His lack of commitment to God is a hinderance and is stalling their relationship.

This story will have you in your feelings.  I loved especially Priscilla's character.  I have had some of the same thoughts she expressed in the story.  Sound, Biblical advice was woven all throughout the story.  The author writes such heartwarming scenes, and you can feel God when he's speaking to the characters as if He was speaking to you.  God was shown throughout the entire story.  Although it's shown as book 2 in the series, it read as a stand alone.  This was my first time reading this author, and It won't be my last.  I plan to go back and read book 1 and am anticipating book 3.

Book Review: A Little Bit of Karma by Reshonda Tate Billingsley

Book: A Little Bit of Karma
Author:  Reshonda Tate Billingsley
Genre: Women's Suspense
Rating: 💣💣💣💣💣

From the outside looking in, Jay and Shannon LoveJoy's Marriage is perfect.  Their call in radio show has turned into them being invited to a marriage retreat.  But looks can be deceiving when the couple has to pretend they don't want a divorce when it's discovered Jay has had an affair.  When Jay's mistress turns up dead, the couple is accused of the murder, narrowly escape running home, and they have to not only find the real killers in order to clear their name, they must also work together and decide if they want to continue to stay married to each other.

Although this book is different from the authors usual style, it was none the less a phenomenal read.  I enjoyed the story, and did not expect the twists and turns that were woven throughout the book.   I did not want this story to end.  Although the author normally doesn't do sequels, I would like to see another one to see an update with these characters.  I really enjoyed reading this book, and It will be on one of my top reads for the year.  Amazing job

EXCERPT

CHAPTER 1

            Eight is her number

            McKinley is her name

            Yes, she is the reason

            We're gonna win this game.

The dugout is cheering and going crazy. The bases are loaded and Big Mac is up to bat. Although she's skinny, she got the nickname because she's a finisher. Known for being a clutch player, sending balls deep into center field. McKinley's hit the scoreboard at least five times this season and has knocked the ball over the fence at least six times. Someone from the stands once hollered Big Mac, and the name stuck.

It's a full count with two strikes, three balls at the bottom of the seventh inning, and we're down by two. If Big Mac lives up to her reputation, she'll bring us all home, and we'll win the game.

"Stay calm and focus," Coach Todd yelled from the coach’s box.

The pitcher throws the ball, and crack! Big Mac sends the ball deep into center field right over the fence. Our dugout goes wild and they all run to home plate to welcome us in chanting:

            Come home

            Come home

            We miss you

            We miss you

            Come home

            Come home

"That's the ball game!" The umpire yells.

It’s shaping up to be the best summer ever! I'm playing my dream position and our team chemistry is the best it's ever been. Most of us have played together since twelve and under softball and we're genuine friends. Coach says you can't buy the kind of chemistry we've developed over the years.

I'll dream about this game for months to come. I had four runs, made four outs, and almost a double play. Jade, my best friend and our first baseman, dropped the ball. But we're working on making that play work. By the big tournament, we should have mastered it. We're practicing, but game situations always come out different.

On the drive home, I gave a recap of the highlights to my family. They could barely get a word in. Mama finally said, "When we get home, we need to talk."

***

"Are you kidding me?" I said, dropping into a chair at the kitchen table. "But it's a big tournament for our team. Ma, it's a big tournament for me!”

"There will be more tournaments this summer and the next. There is more to life than playing softball. Gran's house is too much for her to take care of by herself, and her health has not been the best lately. She needs our help and we are going to give it to her. Our family is important and it comes first above everything else."

"What about Uncle Jaxon or Auntie Liv and their families? Can't they do it, or at least help? Why do we have to do it?"

"I can't count on either of them right now. Your dad and I have discussed it and our decision is final."

"And you never considered how your decision would impact me, or even how I'd feel about it? I've worked hard, really hard over, the last year to get better. And now that I've finally secured my position as shortstop, you're snatching the rug from under me. I'm not saying I don't want to help Gran, but can we do it after my tournament?"

"Don't be so dramatic, Daisy. We're all making sacrifices. And, I need you to move your things into your brother's room before we leave. When we return, I want the room to be ready for your Gran."

"D.J., Ma. Will you please call me D.J. all the time?"

From where I sit, it looks like I'm the only one making sacrifices around here. Gran is coming to live with all of us, but I'm having to give up my room and miss a crucial tournament. Other than my parents’ bedroom, mine is the next largest, with an ensuite bathroom. Daddy says he wants Gran to have her privacy.

I have to move in with J.P., my nine-year-old brother. His room smells like old cheese, he farts in his sleep, and still has an imaginary friend. I'd be better off sleeping in a closet. Since I'm a girl, my older brother, J.R. and J.P. should share a room. My parents wouldn't even entertain the thought. So, I'm stuck.

Like I said before, I'm missing a crucial softball tournament. Mama thinks it's just another tournament in a summer of tournaments. It's so much more. I've worked my butt off to move from outfield to shortstop. I've practiced all year long, including during the off-season. I've always wanted to play shortstop since I first started playing when I was nine years old. Daddy took me to see a college softball game. Kattie Pierre was the shortstop. She was ridiculously good, catching balls and tagging runners between first and second base. Kattie stopped a ground ball, tagged second base, slung it to first, making a double play. From that day, I set my sights on playing shortstop just like her.

My coaches have always put me in the outfield because of my speed. Finally, Coach Todd gave me a chance to play in-field. So far this season, I've led our team in runs and outs. I haven't made a double-play yet, but I'm looking forward to that day. I don't want to let our team down.

This upcoming tournament is a game-changer for all of us. It's the Super Summer Classic Showdown in Chicago. The top two teams are guaranteed a bid to the Midwest Nationals in Chicago. Coach Todd says we have a good shot. Playing on that level is the kind of opportunity softball players only get in their dreams. And it can open doors that high school leagues can't. There will be college coaches from all over the U.S. looking for their next standout player. Although Kattie Pierre hasn't played for years, she still attends.

When we return to practice tomorrow, I will have to tell my teammates and coach, that I won't be going with them to the big tournament, and their shot at Nationals is basically in the hands of Mya.

Questions: Stuff About The Books

What inspired you to write this book?

I was inspired to write the A Louisiana Love Series after I wrote about the families in my Christmas books Love Me Again and Never Looking Back. I needed to explore these families a little deeper and they made sure I knew it.

What can we expect from you in the future?

I’m presently working on another four book series and a Christmas release that will go out this year with friends.

How did you come up with the concept and characters for the book?

Most of the times, the characters introduce themselves to me. It has become so interesting how names just pop up in your mind and you know they must be a book character.

Where did you come up with the names in the story?

Lots of African American families keep with the same initials in their family, especially, if the husband and wife have that initial. So, these families have stuck to that tradition.

What did you enjoy most about writing this book?

With all three, I loved writing up into the plots. For the first time I really had no clue what my plot would be. I wanted to try writing without grafting and it worked for me. I also really enjoyed digging for another language. I wanted to incorporate Spanish since the characters were Latino, and it was amazing.

Tell us about your main characters- what makes them tick?

When I think about he main family, The Booth Family…

the wife, Jessica Booth, is definitely the matriarch of her family.

her husband, Jasper Booth Sr., is a witty mild-mannered man.

their adopted son, Kane Jackson Booth, is a hot head whose eventually going to figure out why he’s so angry.

their son, Jasper Jr., is a complete smart mouth who I’d like to say is me as a guy, and

their daughter, Jasmine, is the typical spoiled baby girl of the family who has her father’s heart and her mother’s stubbornness.

How did you come up with the title of your first novel?

After the Christmas books, I was left thinking their stories had to be explored. Well, because the two had fallen in love over the Christmas holidays, I knew how lovers felt to be apart. So, I came up with her making a choice that was wrong to everyone else but right for her. Then the next titles just flowed from that. The effect of choice…is what I’d like to call it.

Who designed your book covers?

I have been blessed to be able to design my own covers. I almost love doing  covers as much as I love writing.

If your book was made into a film, who would you like to play the lead?

Angela Bassett would definitely me Lady Jessica Booth.

Laurence Fishburne would be Jasper Booth Sr.

Will Smith would be Dr. James Booth.

Gabrielle Union would be Jasmine Booth.

LaLa Anthony would be Veronica Kimbrel-Booth.

The Sisters Valerie (Salma Hayak) & Vashti- (Eva Longoria)

Jennifer Lopez would be Selena Cox.

Fantasia Barrino would be Jade Booth.

Rome Flynn would be Vance Kimbrel Jr.

What is your favorite part of this book and why?

In the Right Choice: My favorite part is when Vance and Austin were taken hostage by Elaina. I loved how Austin had to finally come to terms with the power of God, by hearing and obeying the Spirit.

In the Wrong Decision: My favorite part is when Selena goes to Dade and talks with her abuela. It’s so important to get an understanding and sometimes when we do, we come to peace with other’s decisions.

In the Perfect Chance: My favorite part was the wedding. I just loves how God will take over and although you set things to go one way, He makes it fit His plans.

If you could spend time with a character from your book whom would it be? And what would you do during that day?

I would definitely spend my day with Jessica Booth. I love strong women and I would just want to sit in the living room talking about lasting marriages and raising children. I’d also like to discuss how she became so firm in her relationship with Christ. She’s doing nothing or making no decisions without the Lord.

Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?

Lavender—Calming and soothing at the same time.

Is there an writer which brain you would love to pick for advice? Who would that be and why?

I know this may seem absolutely crazy, but for me it would be the Apostle Paul. His writings are so loved packed and you could feel the love and admiration he had for Christ and His people through his writings

A Little About Me:

I’ve always been a love child per se…loving all things romance. When my second grade teacher introduced me to Amelia Bedelia books by Herman Parish, I knew I would write.

Then my mom introduced me to romance by Danielle Steels and who we considered the bad girl of books at that time—Jackie Collins. Finally, I decided I’d be the Danyelle with the “y” who will write books about love.

Life has been so rewarding as I finally realize that everything I’ve ever faced was simply for my good. The good, bad, and the ugly now find itself woven in the corridors of my books and I’m grateful to be able to share stories with the world of God’s goodness, grace, mercy, and love.

And you know what’s even greater? We don’t have to be perfect to be a part of His family, to receive His love, or to be a recipient of His grace.

He has shown me that I can write about love, problems, situations, and circumstances that we face as humans but also show how we overcome the situations and circumstances we face, by the blood of the lamb and the words of our testimony.

As you read this book or any of my books, understand that they are in fact a testimony to God’s goodness, grace, mercy, and love towards His people.

More About Me:

I’m learning how to accept that my books are dedicated for ministry tools. I can remember a moment of not being saved. Or, was with one foot in Christ and the other dipping in and out of sin. So, the reality was, I was warring against living a life of holiness. If you asked me, I thought I was saved, but I was comfortable practicing sin.

One day, it hit me, if you genuinely want to see God’s blessings and the manifestation of His Spirit, you have to learn what it means to die daily.

A part of this daily death was to stop reading books that encourage sin. I’ve been a reader all my life, and I never realized how much of an impact book was having on me until I stopped reading books that made my body react.

Then, I decided I needed to write the type of books I love to read. Books that encouraged a walk with Christ explored love but honored the bedroom of the married. I may take you in their room, but I will never allow you to see what happens in their marital connection experience.

Even for my characters, it’s their place where God closes the covers for just the two of them.

Does this make my books better than anyone else’s? Not. It just makes them an option for those fleeing a life of sexual sins, but desire to read about love. It’s all in what you want and what works for you.
