Raphael stared down at the bags filling the vestibule. There were four large suitcases and a designer duffel bag he’d purchased for Kena last year. He didn’t even know the designer but knew she would have it because it cost a grip to purchase. He wanted her to have everything and more.
She ain’t leaving me and taking my shit, was his first thought, but as he walked through the huge house, he realized she wasn’t there, and the smaller nondescript suitcases were gone with her. Racing back to the living room, he kicked one of the bags, and realized it was empty. Checking one and then the other, he saw they were all empty, except the duffel. It was filled with other expensive handbags he’d purchased.
There was also a note: Raph, I told you it was me or the bag... I’m not living that life with you forever. Since you chose the bag, here are a few more.
Kena.
Feeling frustrated and scared, Raphael turned around in a circle, their life together, flashing before his eyes. She warned him.
“Raph, we both have degrees. You promised you would stop the... the street business as soon as you graduated. Now you have a master’s in international finance and all kinds of offers but you’re still about the bag.”
Raphael watched her as she spoke but said nothing. She was right and he knew it, but the job they were offering paid sixty thousand. His weed business brought in that every other month. He couldn’t see a way to stop. Kena was earning six figures with her makeup and hair importing business, but it wasn’t enough. They would go from almost five hundred thousand a year to just over two.

“You have one more year to figure it out. We own this house and both our cars, and we stacked money. I’m done looking over my shoulder. I love you but we can be out, or I can. I’m over thirty now. I want a baby and normalcy. I’m not having a kid while you’re doing this.”
She stared him down, waiting for a response he couldn’t and wouldn’t give. Three hundred sixty-six days later, she was gone.

¥¥¥¥¥

Aretha held her daughter in her arms as they stood waiting for Kena’s flight. She knew how much Kena loved Raphael, but she also knew when Kena was done, she was done. There was once a time, Kena hadn’t approved of her mother’s life. As soon as she’d turned seventeen and had graduated high school, she left and hadn’t looked back, though she loved her and kept in touch always.
Aretha had been a hairstylist who ran her business in her kitchen with other side hustles included. She sold stolen items and allowed neighborhood guys to gamble in her home on weekends for a price. Kena had chosen to stay with Mary, her father’s mother, on weekends. But now, years removed from that place, Kena was leaving again. Her ticket said Miami, but Aretha knew that was only a stop on the way to somewhere else.
“Why leave, Kena?” Aretha asked, pulling back, looking at her daughter.
Kena was beautiful with dark brown skin, perfect brows she was obsessed with and a full pouty mouth.
“Mom, I need to. Raphael would give me no peace, and I need him to believe me when I say no more. We were married two years before I knew. I love him so much I looked the other way for three more years but not now. I can’t compromise on that. It wasn’t necessary then and it’s less than necessary now. I must do this. I love you.” Kena kissed her mom’s face, a face so much like her own, and hugged her before heading to catch her flight.
Aretha watched her, hot tears coursing down her cheeks. Kena was all she had. Her mom had passed a year earlier, and her father had been gone for years. She was an only child, born to parents who were the only children and Kena was her only child. While she and Raphael were so close he could be her natural born son, she could choke the life out of him. He made this bed for both to lie in. It took everything not to go and confront him, but she knew if she did, there would be hell to pay with Kena. She was leaving but allowed no one to disrespect her husband. The only reason Aretha knew about Raphael’s business was because he’d told her.

Moore Family Saga by Michele Sims Book Blitz

MOORE FAMILY SAGA SERIES BY MICHELE SIMS

ACT I SEED ON FIRE

Twenty five years before the events in the novel, The Fire God Tour, Kaiden and Alicia Moore, originally from North Carolina, were enjoying a life full of love and passion.  As a young, beautiful and an upwardly mobile professional couple who had made their home in New York City, they were busy balancing their careers with the demands of their new marriage which as fate would have it, included an unexpected bundle of joy. They got pregnant on their honeymoon and so began their adventure in this novel, The Seed on Fire, a sexy contemporary romance of a multi-cultural couple with elements of fantasy that is also the prequel to the novel The Fire God Tour.
Nothing about their lives together has ever been typical and their relationship will forever be changed by a series of nightmarish events that threaten their love and the life of their unborn child. Will their commitment to each other and support of their close knit family be enough to cope with their challenges? Come and join them on their journey as they experience the joys and excitement awaiting the birth of their son, Miles Aridio Moore, a process, to their surprise, also fosters a period of significant self-growth.

ACT II PLAYING WITH FIRE

This is the second installation of Cade and Lecia Moore’s romantic suspense story. Cade’s music career is taking off. While finishing a schedule of gigs in Paris, he gets a call from his brother Vincent back in the states, who has been watching over Cade’s son, Miles, and his wife, Lecia. Vincent has some surprising news. Miles, now seven, is showing extraordinary abilities that allow him to produce fire. As a member of the Network, a secret society with nearly bottomless resources, Vincent has been able to determine that Miles’s abilities aren’t unique but an extremely rare genetic mutation.
Cade returns to the states to be with his family, but it’s clear that life cannot go on as normal when Miles suffers from an intense illness that leaves him immobile and mute for days. Through Vincent’s Network contacts, Cade and Lecia are able to find adequate care for Miles at a facility that understands his condition.
Aside from his unusual ability, Miles shows an affinity for several other skills, from writing as a result of his extensive vocabulary, to singing and dancing. But a dark side also appears: in the notebook he uses to list new words he learns, he’s keeping a separate list—of people who he plans to make disappear.

THE FIRE GOD TOUR

Miles Moore, baptized in the faith and raised in a spiritual family but...every thing he does isn't Christian. Bella Wahlberg can't save his soul but, she had the power to claim his heart.

V is for Vicious by Danielle Allen Book Blitz

V IS FOR VICIOUS BY DANIELLE ALLEN

My family was rich with love, but we were broke. So, I was willing to do anything to make sure I created the life I wanted.
My best friends and I catapulted to the top of the popularity food chain following V’s Halloween Costume Party freshman year. It was a lot of work keeping up with the social demands of popularity, but the networking opportunities set me up for future success.
Because I was willing to do whatever it took to secure my future, when V extended an invitation for me to join, I jumped at the chance. I was willing to lie, cheat, and steal to reap the benefits of the elusive secret society. A V membership meant doors opened and opportunities knocked. There was only one line I said I wasn’t willing to cross. But when it came down to it, I wavered.
People always want to know what V stands for. For me, V stands for vicious.
What I did was a betrayal.
It was disloyal.
It was treacherous.
It was necessary.
I’m not the villain in this story. But what I did was vicious.
And that’ll haunt me for the rest of my life.

EXCERPT

We’d only gotten a few feet away before we passed a crying mummy. “I hate men,” she grumbled as she fell into step with us.
“Amen, sister!” Maureen agreed, wiping her eyes.
“My boyfriend just dumped me because he said he wanted to be single for events like this,” the stranger confessed weepily.
“I lost my virginity tonight to an asshole who left with someone else less than an hour later,” Maureen shared. “I think there’s something wrong with the men on this campus.”
I thought about Easton because he seemed like he was one of the good ones.
And as if the cosmic gods were working against me, I spotted him as soon as we turned the corner to head to the bathroom. He was hugging someone dressed in a tight bodysuit and whispering in her ear. As she leaned back to laugh at whatever he’d said, his eyes locked with mine. I tried to tear my eyes away, but I couldn’t.
Not until she lifted to her toes and planted a kiss on his lips.
I shook my head. “I will never take a man on this campus seriously.” I entered the crowded bathroom with Maureen and our new compatriot. “Focus on you. Be about you. Life is too short to be worried about or crying over a man.”
“You’ve never been in love before, have you?” the stranger asked.
I gave her a look. “Fuck love, get money.”
The makeup stained face of the stranger twisted ruefully. “You say that now…”
Lady, you don’t know me, I thought as I turned my attention to Maureen who was splashing water on her face.

ABOUT LACEY BAKER

Lacey Baker, a Maryland native, lives with her husband, three children, grandson and English Bulldog in what most would call Suburban America--a townhouse development where everybody knows each other and each other's kids. Family cook-outs, reunion vacations, and growing up in church have all inspired Lacey to work towards her dreams and to write about the endurance of family and the quest to find everlasting love. To date she has written in several genres including small town romance, YA paranormal (as Artist Arthur), a cozy mystery series titled Rumors and adult paranormal (as A.C. Arthur).

My Review:
Although Hallmark is known for their clean holiday movies, The one thing they're not know for is diversity when it comes to holiday movies.  If the movies comes close to this book, they're on the right track.  This book was a cute, sweet holiday read.  Adam,  baker who has aspirations to become a business owner, after a tragedy has to raise his daughter alone, and Taylor, an architect who has never had a forever home due to her parents moving around a lot when she was a child, are thrown together when they have to help each other build a giant gingerbread house for a city contest.  The author showed great interaction between Taylor, Adam and his daughter, Brooke. And Ms. Brooke totally stole the show. I really enjoyed the flow and pace of the story, and I felt that I was right there with them as everything was coming together.  I'm actually excited about seeing this movie later during the holiday season.

SELIMAH

Malik was insistent on picking me up from the airport. I was sure that he was tired from his final game in Denver the night before, but that didn’t seem to matter to him. He was at the airport bright and early waiting for me. I found him signing autographs outside his car with a half-hearted smile on his face. He was hurt that they didn’t make the playoffs. He hadn’t said it yet, but I knew. His mahogany colored eyes lit up when I reached his car. After wrapping up a conversation with a fan, he pulled me into an earnest, yet tender embrace. His sandalwood scent enveloped me, and my cheeks flooded with heat.
His hugs always made me feel giddy, warm, and most importantly, protected. The sounds of horns and people’s luggage dragging across the concrete sidewalk drifted to the background.
“I missed you, Lola.” His lips were pressed against the shell of my ear. When I looked into his eyes, my heart skipped a beat. They were low, inviting.
“I missed you too, Mal.”
After a moment of staring deeply into my eyes, he ran a hand over his face and sighed. “Let’s get out of here.” There was a hint of hesitation before he released the arm he had around my waist.
My hand was perched outside the window as I took in the fresh spring air. Malik had been driving for almost two hours and we were drifting from the suburbs to winding roads. We stopped at a cute diner for breakfast before hitting the road. The first hour was spent talking about my time in Europe. I’d told him every detail during our calls, but he wanted to hear it again. He engaged me and asked questions, but I could tell he was trying to avoid talking about how their season ended. He was competitive by nature and losing hurt no matter how long he’d been playing. Every loss stung like the first. For about twenty minutes, I slept. My body was already experiencing the effects of the time difference; my early morning flight only made it worse.
I glanced over at Malik. The playlist he listened to before his games played as he bobbed his head. His attention was on the road, but he never missed a word of Nipsey Hussle’s “Hussle & Motivate.” I joined in rapping the few lyrics I knew, making him laugh. He looked over at me and smiled.
“Wanna talk about it?” I asked turning down the music some. He shook his head then gripped the steering wheel tighter.
“Okay,” I whispered. “Where are we going?”
“It’s a surprise.”
“How long will we be on this adventure?” I pressed.
“A week,” he stated simply.
I gasped, “What if I have something to do within that time? I have to meet with my mentees.”
His silky baritone filled the car when he laughed. “Gwen took care of that. Your mentees are cool with not meeting with you this week.”
I was speechless.
“You coordinated this surprise with Gwen?”
“Yup, and Nini. Everything is copacetic, Lo. Just relax, I got this.”
With my arms folded, I released a long dramatic sigh. He laughed and continued, “When have I ever not come through with a good surprise?”
My brow rose, ready to challenge him. “December 30th, 2008. You surprised me and took me to see Lil’ Wayne.”
He belted out another laugh and it made my fake scowl turned into a smile. “You used to love Weezy.”
“No,you loved Weezy and knew your mother wouldn’t let you go alone so you dragged me into it.”
That was just one of the many times he used me as an accomplice in his shenanigans.
“Aight, but you still had a good time though, so that doesn’t count.”
“Or all the times you had me waiting in line for some damn Jordans.”
“Always been a rider,” he mused with a sly smirk. “Have I told you how much I missed you?”
“Yeah, yeah,” I waved him off.
“We’re almost there, Lo. Just sit tight,” he smiled and focused back on the road.

My Review
Wow.  This was such an amazing full length story from this new author.  Not only does the story give us some cultural information, it will tug on your emotions.  There were several surprises that I wasn't expected woven throughout the story.  I truly felt bad for Hannah.  I'm not sure how I'd react in the same situation.  I think I need a sequel, because I would like to know what happens to the characters.

Excerpt

In the beginning, there were fireflies, crisp floating dots wading through the summer breeze.
There were children in the streets and popsicles being passed out by a local grandmother. There were skinned knees, too much sunscreen, and the wafting scent of freshly cut grass. There were long days and even longer nights.

Summers in Knox Ridge were just as much about mosquito nets and cicada songs as they were about lemonade and sunshine.

Knox Ridge wasn’t the biggest town in Georgia, but there were too many of us to learn each other's names by heart. Most people grew up on the same street their parents did all those years ago.
They grew from a twinkle in their parents’ eyes into people who would one day take their places in the layout of our town. Their legacies casted shadows on every succeeding generation—what they’d do, where they lived, and who they loved. The town had a blueprint most didn’t question, but also didn’t consider too much.

Being a part of Knox Ridge was a privilege,” my Nana used to say.
It was a privilege to live around people who truly care for you and an honor to have a place like Knox Ridge to come home to.
“Every town on Earth says they’re the best,” Nana always said. “But how many towns can say ‘if you’re with us, we’ll accept every part of you?’”
Only Knox Ridge.

She swore that no one truly left Knox Ridge once they’d gotten a taste of living here, but some took breaks. She was right, some people drifted in and out of our sleepy town, but they always came back home. Even if they hadn’t realized they’d left.

I met Oliver Tanner one blistering afternoon in July.
He was five years old, moving back into the childhood home of his recently deceased father. I was four, sitting next door on my front porch with my best friend, Paige, munching on watermelon as we did nearly every afternoon.

Paige’s father had been my father’s best friend since childhood. Like I said, there was a blueprint to this town. Even Oliver with his ripped cargo shorts and dinosaur toys clenched tightly to his little chest. I had never seen anyone in that house. Not until they arrived.

“I never thought I’d live to see another Tanner live in that house,” my grandmother said.
I wouldn’t learn until years later the tumultuous history of the Tanner family in town. Once one of the most respected families of Knox Ridge, Oliver’s grandfather had left them disgraced and destitute three decades earlier when he ran off to California with a woman he barely knew. The Tanners had been on a downward spiral ever since.

“Well come on, sweeties,” my grandmother nudged Paige and myself. “Let’s go say hello. See if they need anything. That girl doesn’t look a day over twenty.”

Nana had been more or less right. Josey Tanner was twenty-five, freshly widowed, and out of money from living out west. Her only option was moving to this house she’d inherited from her husband’s passing and spread out his meager life insurance for as long as she could.

Nana introduced us to Oliver and his mother. Josey likewise introduced him to us.
“You got movers to help you with that truck?” Nana asked.
“No,” Josey said.
“Are you renting it by the hour or the day?”
“Day,” she answered. “I’ve got it rented for the whole week.”
Nana nodded before waving them both over. “No use doing anything now, then. Come over for some lemonade. My sons get off work at about five. They’ll wrangle up some friends to do it for you.”
That day was one of my first memories of Nana being Nana, pulling people together for the common good as she always did.

“Now you two be nice to the Tanner boy,” Nana told Paige and me. “He looks like he could use a bit of TLC.”
That day was also the day Ollie was entrusted to my keep. He was a year older than me, but back in those days, he was as large and loud as a church mouse. His sandy blonde hair stuck up in ways that defied gravity and he mostly muttered as we asked him about his dinosaurs.

We dragged him out back where all the magic happened, spending hours in the sun as the clouds and world passed us by. Our parents filtered in and out to keep an eye on us.
When the sun started to go down, and the fireflies started to peek out from their slumber, it was like his whole face lit up. I think that was the first time I knew I never wanted to stop looking at that smile.

My Review

One thing I really enjoyed about this story, is that the build up to their romantic relationship wasn't rushed.  Even though they knew each other as children, once they became adults, they didn't rush into being together.  Not only that, but all the characters were sweet, nice and simple.  All the things you enjoy about in reading a book about a small town.  Several scenes tugged at my heart strings.  I also took away a couple of lessons from the book.  I really enjoyed this book.  The author did such a great job

She could make out the sloped roof of the house on the far end of the block, could tell by the fresh cornflower blue color of the dormer that it had received another coat of paint since she’d last seen it three years ago.
Three years ago.

It didn’t seem that long, yet, in a way, it seemed like a lifetime ago. When Ivana thought about the person she’d been when she left New Orleans on that balmy summer afternoon, she had a hard time reconciling her with the woman standing on this chipped French Quarter street right now. Save for a few additional wrinkles that had popped up in the corners of her eyes and a faded scratch courtesy of a run-in with a cactus during a hike in the mountains of Hispaniola, she looked the same.
It was the insidethat had changed.

“Not completely. You’re still too much of a coward to face him.”
She sucked in a deep, cleansing breath and tried to convince herself that she wasn’t a coward. But as comforting—even necessary—as it occasionally was to lie to herself, it had never done her any good in the past.

If she wasn’t a coward, she wouldn’t have spent the past two weeks avoiding the man she was supposed to marry just a week before she’d left that faithful day in July. She wouldn’t have spent an entire night in costume two weeks ago at the kickoff party for the Diane Holmes Foundation, trailing him around the room, wondering about his relationship with the gorgeous woman he’d had on his arm.

It isn’t your concern who he has on his arm.
She’d had her chance to be that person, and had thrown it away. When it came to Jonathan Campbell, she didn’t have any claim on him. Zero. He was a man from her past. A man she’d loved, but one she’d run from. And if it wasn’t for the fact that a close friend needed legal advice, Ivana would have done everything in her power to continue running from Jonathan.

She should have told Angus that she couldn’t help him. There were other channels he could have gone through to address his situation. But it went against everything in her nature not to help a person in need. Providing aid to those in trouble was at the heart of her very existence. It’s how she’d met Angus Thomson. A fellow relief worker, they’d worked alongside each other for the past three years in Haiti. So when Angus had called, frantic over an issue with his G-1 visa, Ivana couldn’t help but get involved. When she realized that they needed to talk to someone with legal expertise, Jonathan was the first person who came to mind.

A chill raced through her body, and it had nothing to do with the brisk wind still blowing off the river. She lifted the long, simple, slightly tarnished chain she kept around her neck and fiddled with the breathtaking ring that hung from it. For the past three years she’d worn the engagement ring Jonathan had given her close to her heart, treating it like a talisman, seeking strength from it when she needed courage. Ironic that she would turn to it today, when the courage she sought had to do with facing the man who’d given her the ring in the first place.

She’d envisioned the moment when she would face Jonathan again countless times, speculating about how he would react. Would he be upset? Relieved? Would he look at her as if she were a ghost? She’d tried to put herself in his position, but when she considered what herreaction would be to seeing someone who’d left only a week before their wedding, she could barely stomach it.
Regret coasted through her bloodstream. Thick, suffocating regret. She knew the taste of it well. It had been a healthy part of her diet for years now.
She needed to just get this over with. She would fulfill her promise to Angus, and then she would leave. Who knows, maybe Jonathan wouldn’t even be around. It was late. He may have already left the office.

Ivana closed her eyes, sent up a quick prayer, and crossed the street. A mixture of anxiety and anticipation traveled along her skin as she moved ever closer to the gorgeous structure. The sun had just started its descent, turning the western sky an array of warm oranges, reds and purples.
Her heart thudded within her chest when she noticed a sleek black sedan parked in the reserved parking spot next to the law office.

Well, so much for him not being here.
She’d spent the afternoon coming up with things to do in order to delay her trip, hoping by the time she arrived everyone would be gone for the day. Jonathan had always put in way too many hours at the office. She’d gotten him out of the habit, but apparently he’d reverted back to being a workaholic.

As she approached the house, Ivana couldn’t help but remember the first time she encountered Jonathan here, the very first day they met. She’d charged up the steps of the three-story creole cottage, prepared to do everything within her power to save the house from the ruin she just knew its new owner was preparing to heap upon it.
It had been determined that the house was the place where the first known voodoo healing in New Orleans had occurred, according to her sisters of the religion, which she had practiced for years. When she learned the house was slated to become a new law practice, Ivana assumed the buyer was going to gut it. Instead, he’d restored it to its former glory.
Only days after their thorny initial encounter, she’d been stunned speechless when she’d gone to dinner at the home of longtime family friend, Margo Holmes, and found herself sitting directly across the table from Jonathan Campbell. That’s when Ivana learned that he was the college basketball teammate of her now brother-in-law, Tobias Holmes, her baby sister Sienna’s husband.
It all seemed so, so long ago.

This little jaunt down memory lane isn’t helping. Speed it up.
Ivana rolled her eyes at the annoying voice in her head, which, for some reason, did not want to get with the program when it came to stalling this inevitable meeting. But it wasinevitable. She knew this. It was a miracle she’d managed to go the past two weeks without Jonathan discovering her presence in New Orleans. He was too tied to her family to expect this avoidance dance to go on much longer. It was time she ripped off the Band-Aid.

She climbed the porch steps and tried the door. It was locked.
Of course, it was locked. It was after normal work hours. She rang the doorbell, her heart’s ridiculous racing picking up even more steam as she waited. Ivana counted a full sixty seconds before ringing it again. Maybe he wasn’t here after all. It wasn’t out of the realm of possibility that he left a car parked at the law firm at all times.

Just as she made the decision to leave, the door opened and the man she’d been prepared to marry appeared on the other side.
Every drop of breath she possessed seemed to rush out of her lungs. She’d seen him at the gala a few weeks ago, but always from a distance. This was the first time she’d been this close to him in three years.

The aromatic, woodsy notes of his cologne assaulted her senses, the faint smell bringing with it powerful memories of the one time in her life when she’d felt true happiness. When she’d felt loved. The weight of it was almost enough to break her.
“Hello, Jonathan,” she managed to say, the words struggling past the knot of emotion wedged in her throat.
He stared at her for what seemed like an eternity. A silent, unbearably uncomfortable eternity. Those arresting, gorgeous eyes she’d spent hours gazing into as she lay languidly in his arms now looked at her with a mix of shock and aversion.
“I hope I’m not—” But before she could finish, the alluring lilt of a woman’s soft voice came from somewhere nearby.

“Jonathan, what time is the band supposed to start?” The woman arrived at the door, sidling up alongside him. “Oh, hello,” she said to Ivana, her eyes wide with surprise.
Ivana took in the stunning, honey-toned beauty with legs that went on for days. She looked from the woman standing next to him in a gorgeous body-hugging gown that shimmered with thousands of crystals, to Jonathan, whom she just now realized wore a sleek, black tuxedo.
He was going out. Theywere going out. On a date.
A retched sensation settled like a lead anchor in the pit of her stomach. It wasn’t as if she was surprised he was seeing someone; she’d had to put a stop to Sienna’s reports on his extremely robust dating life over the years. But hearing about it from her sister while she worked in a village thousands of miles away was different from witnessing it firsthand.

“I…” Ivana started. “I didn’t mean to disturb you. I just…I needed to speak with you.”
The discomfort in the air was palpable as he continued to stare at her with that stoic expression. After another few moments passed, he finally said, “We’re late for an event.”
The iciness in his tone caused a shock of goosebumps to pop up along her skin. They were the first words he’d spoken to her in three years. To have him address her so coldly, without an ounce of feeling, was something she probably should have anticipated, but foolishly had not.
She would be lying if she said it didn’t hurt. She would also be lying if she didn’t admit that it was nothing less than what she deserved.

“I—” Ivana said again, but she wasn’t sure how to respond. “I’m sorry for bothering you,” she finally managed. The words felt like sandpaper as the came out of her throat.
“Come by tomorrow during normal business hours,” Jonathan said. He turned to the woman next to him. “Are you ready?”
“I just need to grab my clutch.” She looked to Ivana. “Excuse me,” she said, her eyes kind, her smile even kinder. “I love your skirt, by the way.”
Ivana looked down at her bright, flowing skirt. She had a closet full of them. “Thank you,” she returned.

She looked back up to find Jonathan staring at her with an emotionless expression. She’d run dozens of scenarios in her head, anticipating how he would react when they finally saw each other again. She’d readied herself for his shock. Even for his fury. But never for such…indifference. His apathy at what she considered to be one of the most significant moments she’d faced in years made her feel hollow inside.

“I should have called before coming,” Ivana said once she and Jonathan were alone again.
His brows arched and he shook his head, huffing out a humorless grunt of laughter. “A call? Yeah, maybe you should have called after three years,” he finished with unmistakable disdain in his voice.
Ah, there it was. There was the anger she’d anticipated.
The knot in her belly tightened by several degrees.

She’d expected this, hadn’t she? Anger was an acceptable reaction when the woman who’d left you at the altar showed up on your doorstep without warning after three long years. His anger was totally justified. Still, that didn’t mean it didn’t hurt.
“Jonathan, I know—” Ivana started, but stopped when his date returned, carrying a sparkling royal blue clutch in her hand.

“I’m ready,” the woman said. She captured Jonathan’s arm and wrapped her hand around it. It wasn’t an overly possessive move, yet Ivana still had a visceral reaction to seeing the woman’s delicate fingers caressing his skin. Her head knew that she’d given up all rights to him the moment she’d boarded that plane to Haiti, but her heart didn’t care. Her throat ached and her insides clenched with proprietorial jealousy.

Jonathan and his date stepped out onto the porch. Ivana wasn’t sure why she remained standing there as he locked the door behind him. She should have left two minutes ago, after he’d so coldly told her to come back tomorrow.

Yet she remained standing there, watching as the impeccably dressed couple turned toward the stairs.
“Goodnight,” the woman on his arm said. Jonathan tipped his head in a bid of farewell before escorting his date down the stairs and to the black sedan.
Ivana walked down the porch and onto the sidewalk. She stood there watching as his car backed out of the parking spot and pulled onto the street.
Her eyes connected briefly with Jonathan’s as he stared at her in the rearview mirror seconds before turning onto St. Phillip Street.
