Book Review: Concrete Rose by Angie Thomas

 Title: Concrete Rose

Author:  Angie Thomas

Genre:  Young Adult

Rating:  πŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œ

About the Book:

If there’s one thing seventeen-year-old Maverick Carter knows, it’s that a real man takes care of his family. As the son of a former gang legend, Mav does that the only way he knows how: dealing for the King Lords. With this money he can help his mom, who works two jobs while his dad’s in prison.

Life’s not perfect, but with a fly girlfriend and a cousin who always has his back, Mav’s got everything under control.

Until, that is, Maverick finds out he’s a father.

Suddenly he has a baby, Seven, who depends on him for everything. But it’s not so easy to sling dope, finish school, and raise a child. So when he’s offered the chance to go straight, he takes it. In a world where he’s expected to amount to nothing, maybe Mav can prove he’s different.

When King Lord blood runs through your veins, though, you can't just walk away. Loyalty, revenge, and responsibility threaten to tear Mav apart, especially after the brutal murder of a loved one. He’ll have to figure out for himself what it really means to be a man.

My Review:

The prequel to The Hate You Gives takes you on a Journey of Star's father, Maverick and what he went through at the age of 17.  This book was able to get me out of a slight reading slump, and It was so good I was able to get through it in a matter of hours.  There were laughter and tears and it was just such an emotional ride from start to finish.   The book will also start some conversations.  It was truly a pleasure to see Maverick and Lisa from the beginning.  This was such a great book.

ABOUT KATHY DOUGLASS

Kathy is a born reader who as a child always had her nose in a book. She went from reading Bobbsey Twins to romance novels. One day she stumbled upon The Shining by Stephen King and was hooked on horror. When she caught herself checking under the bed and looking in the closet for monsters, she knew it was time to put down the horror and return to romance novels.

Her return was short-lived. She started law school and soon her reading was limited to legal opinions. Then she discovered Harlequin romances. They were short enough to read in a week and she wouldn't have to search her room before she went to sleep.

When her first child was born, she became a stay at home mom. Her second child soon followed, and reading was limited to children's books.

All too soon her kids were attending pre-school. Kathy spent those hours renewing her relationship with romance novels. Soon she felt the urge to write the stories she wanted to read. In 2016, Kathy sold to Harlequin. Her first book, How to Steal the Lawman's Heart, was released in February, 2017. Since then, she has released several more books with Harlequin.

Book Review: Hurricane Summer by Asha Bromfield

Title:  Hurricane Summer

Author:  Asha Bromfield

Genre:  Young Adult

Rating:  πŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œ

About The Book:

Tilla has spent her entire life trying to make her father love her. But every six months, he leaves their family and returns to his true home: the island of Jamaica.

When Tilla’s mother tells her she’ll be spending the summer on the island, Tilla dreads the idea of seeing him again, but longs to discover what life in Jamaica has always held for him.

In an unexpected turn of events, Tilla is forced to face the storm that unravels in her own life as she learns about the dark secrets that lie beyond the veil of paradise—all in the midst of an impending hurricane.

Hurricane Summer is a powerful coming of age story that deals with colorism, classism, young love, the father-daughter dynamic—and what it means to discover your own voice in the center of complete destruction.

My Review:

YA is usually  a hit or miss for me, but this book was such a big hit.  There were several themes that face people of color throughout the story.  I will have to read the book again, due to the fact that there was a dictionary of the Patois language, but it wasn't conducive for me to try to flip back and forth while reading  on my kindle.  The author did a great job with the characters explaining hat they were saying to Tilla in a way that she could understand.  Now usually in a book there about one or two characters that I end up not liking.  The opposite happened in this book.  There were only about maybe 4 or 5 characters that I really liked in this story.  The rest were words that I can't really say on here.  The author did such a good job with this book.  I really enjoyed it so very much.

Book review: Lucy's Worth by Letrise T. Carter

Author: Letrise T. Carter

Rating: πŸ’£πŸ’£πŸ’£πŸ’£πŸ’£

Book Blurb:

LucyΚΌs Worth is part one of a young woman's desperate journey to find
herself while trying to make it on her own. Faced with her first true
relationship, Lucy's long battle with low self-esteem will cause her to fall
down a path with a dangerous man. Will Lucy be able to escape the trap
that's been set for her? She's going to have to make the most important
decision of her life -- because her life depends on it!

My Review:

Lucy's Worth is a phenomenal short story in a new series about a young woman and some of the things that happens in her life. Some parts might be triggering to some people, but this was such a great read that is packed in a few pages. This emotional story will take you on such a ride throughout the pages. There are characters that are just not likeable in my opinion, as well as some that are so loveable, you wish you knew them in real life. An exceptional book that would be very beneficial for younger ladies to read. There are several themes throughout the story that are great life lessons. I can't wait for the next book in the series. Phenomenal job

ABOUT LISA WASHINGTON

Award-winning Christian Fiction/Romance author Lisa Washington is a Detroit native and currently residing in Georgia with her family. Washington earned her bachelor’s degree in public relations from Wayne State University in Detroit, MI and a master’s degree in business administration from Averett University in Danville, VA. It wasn’t until she suffered from the stresses of a Ph.D, program that she decided, if she had to write 75-page papers, they would be something she truly enjoyed writing.
Two years later, Washington was accepted into the Master of Fine Arts program for creative writing at Butler University in Indianapolis, IN. She applied with a terrible first draft of her first published novel, “When You Least Expect It.” Washington completed her program in 2016. After two years of peer reviews and a year of learning how to self-publish her novel, she went on to win the 2018 African American Literary Award Show, Best Christian Fiction Award for “When You Least Expect It.”
Washington also served several years in the US Navy before attending college. Washington credits having a strong faith in God and trusting He had a plan for her life. Her faith is also what drives her to write Christian fiction and romance. She is often quoted saying, “If it were not for God, I don’t know where I would be today.”
Lisa Washington and her husband are the co-founders of The Washington Way LLC, which includes Washington Way Financial, Washington Way Publishing, Washington Way Travel, and Ms. Lisa Weddings.
