A Tribute to books about Fathers, and Male Authors

In the month of June, Celebrate Father's day, where we celebrate the fathers and male father figures in our lives.  So for this month's blog post, I am celebrating books about fathers, as well as male author's I'm aware of.  I don't necessarily endorse nor have I read all of these authors neither.

1)  A Christian Father's Day by Pat Simmons (Christian Fiction)

About the Book

But Father’s Day becomes more complicated than Christian or Joy, his wife, could have ever imagined, when the biological fathers of his adopted children threaten to ruin his special day. But he depends on God to guide him through the journey with a surprising outcome.
A Christian Father’s Day is a romantic Christian novella that celebrates fatherhood year round.

2)  We Were Eight Years in Power: An American Tragedy  Ta-Nehisi Coates

About the Book
“We were eight years in power” was the lament of Reconstruction-era black politicians as the American experiment in multiracial democracy ended with the return of white supremacist rule in the South. In this sweeping collection of new and selected essays, Ta-Nehisi Coates explores the tragic echoes of that history in our own time: the unprecedented election of a black president followed by a vicious backlash that fueled the election of the man Coates argues is America’s “first white president.”

But the story of these present-day eight years is not just about presidential politics. This book also examines the new voices, ideas, and movements for justice that emerged over this period—and the effects of the persistent, haunting shadow of our nation’s old and unreconciled history. Coates powerfully examines the events of the Obama era from his intimate and revealing perspective—the point of view of a young writer who begins the journey in an unemployment office in Harlem and ends it in the Oval Office, interviewing a president.

We Were Eight Years in Power features Coates’s iconic essays first published in The Atlantic, including “Fear of a Black President,” “The Case for Reparations,” and “The Black Family in the Age of Mass Incarceration,” along with eight fresh essays that revisit each year of the Obama administration through Coates’s own experiences, observations, and intellectual development, capped by a bracingly original assessment of the election that fully illuminated the tragedy of the Obama era. We Were Eight Years in Power is a vital account of modern America, from one of the definitive voices of this historic moment.

4)  Abba: Experience God as Father and Redeem Your Failure, Hurt, and Pain  by Apostle Matthew L. Stevenson III

About the Book
God has an identity. He does not want to be known as a higher power or confined to our limited understanding and judgment of Him. Those who want to know the name of God—and most importantly want to know God as He desires to be known—can discover him as Abba.

Matthew L. Stevenson III captures all the teachings of Jesus that demonstrated the Father. This book also highlights how aggressively Satan distorts the father role to fracture people’s lives in the areas of:

• Identity
• Security
• Failures
• Confidence

Abba addresses the key to a more fulfilling worship life as well as understanding God’s heart toward the fatherless. A revelation of the father heart of God is needed more now than ever.

It’s 1993, and the computer industry is on the verge of introducing a groundbreaking new technology called the Internet. The rules are clear: Get on board or get left behind. Intellect Technology Incorporated, better known as ITI, has brokered a game-changing deal with WorldNet Labs to acquire the first web browser. But the threat of an EEOC scandal, sordid family alliances, and a stolen laptop leave ITI’s executive staff to wonder if their dream deal will turn to dust before it ever materializes, taking the fate of the struggling company with it. Phil Jacobson may be the only one with an answer.

After years of assisting his private detective father on the job and honing his skills as PhantomPhixer in the Underground digital community, Phil lands his first job in Corporate America. Phil’s father hoped his son’s cushy job at ITI would derail any chance of Phil following in his footsteps as a detective. But when Phil discovers that a hacker contact has evidence that points to his employment at ITI as part of an egregious cover up, it becomes apparent that he has inherited more than just his father’s abhorrent name. Philander Wesley Jacobson is just as much a natural sleuth as his seasoned father, like it or not.

Phil forms an unexpected alliance with a fellow hacker, and with his sister’s help, they’re in a race to uncover the truth about ITI before the company closes the WorldNet deal. If for nothing else, Phil must protect the interests of one of his best friends, the founder of WorldNet Labs. The investigation turns dangerous and almost deadly as Phil and his amateur P.I. team dig up ITI’s repugnant secrets, involving a pile of resumes, hidden assets, and the founder of the company’s affiliation with a secret society known as CLANS. Phil certainly didn’t expect to have to tackle all of these glitches just two weeks before his wedding, but he quickly learns that expectations are nothing more than liabilities when dealing with the Hacks of Life.

18)  What Truth Sounds Like: Robert F. Kennedy, James Baldwin, and Our Unfinished Conversation About Race in America by Michael Eric Dyson

About the Book
NOW A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER | NAMED A BEST/MOST ANTICIPATED BOOK OF 2018 BY: Chicago Tribune • Time A stunning follow up to New York Times bestseller Tears We Cannot Stop Chris Matthews, MSNBC: "A beautifully written book." Shaun King: “I kid you not–I think it’s the most important book I’ve read all year…It’s not just informative and enlightening; it tells a story of an essential moment in history.” Harry Belafonte says: “Dyson has finally written the book I always wanted to read. I had the privilege of attending the meeting he has insightfully written about, and it’s as if he were a fly on the wall...a tour de force...a poetically written work that calls on all of us to get back in that room and to resolve the racial crises we confronted more than fifty years ago.” Joy-Ann Reid says: A work of searing prose and seminal brilliance... Dyson takes that once in a lifetime conversation between black excellence and pain and the white heroic narrative, and drives it right into the heart of our current politics and culture, leaving the reader reeling and reckoning." Robin D. G. Kelley says:“Dyson masterfully refracts our present racial conflagration through a subtle reading of one of the most consequential meetings about race to ever take place. In so doing, he reminds us that Black artists and intellectuals bear an awesome responsibility to speak truth to power."

President Barack Obama says: "Everybody who speaks after Michael Eric Dyson pales in comparison.” In 2015 BLM activist Julius Jones confronted Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton with an urgent query: “What in your heart has changed that’s going to change the direction of this country?” “I don’t believe you just change hearts,” she protested. “I believe you change laws.” The fraught conflict between conscience and politics – between morality and power – in addressing race hardly began with Clinton. An electrifying and traumatic encounter in the sixties crystallized these furious disputes. In 1963 Attorney General Robert Kennedy sought out James Baldwin to explain the rage that threatened to engulf black America. Baldwin brought along some friends, including playwright Lorraine Hansberry, psychologist Kenneth Clark, and a valiant activist, Jerome Smith. It was Smith’s relentless, unfiltered fury that set Kennedy on his heels, reducing him to sullen silence. Kennedy walked away from the nearly three-hour meeting angry – that the black folk assembled didn’t understand politics, and that they weren’t as easy to talk to as Martin Luther King. But especially that they were more interested in witness than policy. But Kennedy’s anger quickly gave way to empathy, especially for Smith. “I guess if I were in his shoes…I might feel differently about this country.” Kennedy set about changing policy – the meeting having transformed his thinking in fundamental ways.

There was more: every big argument about race that persists to this day got a hearing in that room. Smith declaring that he’d never fight for his country given its racist tendencies, and Kennedy being appalled at such lack of patriotism, tracks the disdain for black dissent in our own time. His belief that black folk were ungrateful for the Kennedys’ efforts to make things better shows up in our day as the charge that black folk wallow in the politics of ingratitude and victimhood. The contributions of black queer folk to racial progress still cause a stir. BLM has been accused of harboring a covert queer agenda. The immigrant experience, like that of Kennedy – versus the racial experience of Baldwin – is a cudgel to excoriate black folk for lacking hustle and ingenuity. The questioning of whether folk who are interracially partnered can authentically communicate black interests persists. And we grapple still with the responsibility of black intellectuals and artists to bring about social change. What Truth Sounds Like exists at the tense intersection of the conflict between politics and prophecy – of whether we...

When a late life love affair blooms between Mr. Forrest Payne, the owner of the Pink Slipper Gentleman’s Club, and Miss Beatrice Jordan, famous for stationing herself at the edge of the club’s parking lot and yelling warnings of eternal damnation at the departing patrons, their wedding summons a legend to town. Fleeing to New York to escape both Sela and Kelvin, Raymond finds himself more confused than ever before. New relationships--both male and female--give him enormous pleasure but keep him from finding the inner peace and lasting love he so desperately desires. The horrible illness and death of a friend eventually force Raymond, at last, to face the truth.

31)  Troublemaker by HH Fowler

About the Book
Hell has no fury like a woman scorned!

Rewind ten years before: Two weeks before her wedding, Arnett Sawyer is dragged by her best friend into a nightclub to make a final run at her bachelorette days. This is not just any nightclub, it’s an open atmosphere of perversion where anything between consenting adults can take place. Arnett has been led to believe that her fiancé, Yorick Benson is in Fort Lauderdale on a business trip, only to discover that he is frolicking in the same club she’s been dragged into. And as if that isn’t enough to incite madness, Yorick is doing more than simply frolicking with another woman. He is fully engaged in a forbidden act. Hurt, confused, and feeling the ultimate betrayal, Arnett’s heart darkens with a ravenous lust for revenge.

Fast forward ten years, in a twist of fate, the woman responsible for stealing Arnett’s man that night at the club is about to be wed to the bishop of the church that Arnett attends with a man she married on the rebound. She sees the announcement on her Facebook feed: Rosalind Blue, getting married to Bishop Gary Benson. Rosalind may have truly turned her life around and is looking forward to her new life, but Arnett sees an opportunity not only to expose Rosalind’s secrets, but to utterly annihilate any chance of her happiness.

In line with her character, where she exploits people’s private affairs for the enjoyment of her own misery, she unleashes her wrath. It is one thing when the church has marked her as a troublemaker, but when her own husband agrees, it is downright hell. But Arnett is determined to execute her plan and she has resolved that nothing and no one is bad enough to stop her.

About the Book
Ernest J. Gaines's new novella revolves around a courthouse shooting that leads a young reporter to uncover the long story of race and power in his small town and the relationship between the white sheriff and the black man who "whipped children" to keep order.

After Brady Sims pulls out a gun in a courtroom and shoots his own son, who has just been convicted of robbery and murder, he asks only to be allowed two hours before he'll give himself up to the sheriff. When the editor of the local newspaper asks his cub reporter to dig up a "human interest" story about Brady, he heads for the town's barbershop. It is the barbers and the regulars who hang out there who narrate with empathy, sadness, humor, and a profound understanding the life story of Brady Sims—an honorable, just, and unsparing man who with his tough love had been handed the task of keeping the black children of Bayonne, Louisiana in line to protect them from the unjust world in which they lived.

And when his own son makes a fateful mistake, it is up to Brady to carry out the necessary reckoning. In the telling, we learn the story of a small southern town, divided by race, and the black community struggling to survive even as many of its inhabitants head off northwards during the Great Migration.

49)  I Am Number 8 by Pastor John Gray III

If God can take David--the invisible eighth son of a forgotten family--and turn him into a king, just imagine what magnificent plans He has for redeeming your life.
David was born a number 8--a hidden gem, often overlooked and undervalued by everyone except for God. For David, being a number 8 seemed like a curse until the day God transformed him from the unknown eighth son of Jesse into the much-honored king of Israel.
When God sends out an invitation to greatness, His directions don't always make sense to us. You may feel like the most invisible, broken number 8 out there, but God sees your hidden value and is growing you for better things. David didn't know it, but his time as a simple shepherd with a dull future did not go unnoticed by God. In David's darkest moments, he was cultivating the kind of gifts, wisdom, and leadership he would need to become a king. Even when you're an underdog in the eyes of the world, God is working behind the scenes to develop you into a king or queen.
